With Winnie learning the truth, Angus tells her that it is imperative that no one finds the spring, thus the importance of keeping their identities and location a secret. Jesse tells her that they are immortals, after they drank from the spring, they are impervious to injury and death.

As Jesse and Winnie spend everyday together, they fall in love and she soon learns of the family's secret. When Miles is gambling in town, he catches the attention of the man in the yellow suit. She however learns that Miles, the "dour" one, lost his family and has since acted very bitter and cautious of others. Back at the cabin, Winnie stays with the family for awhile and becomes enamored by their simple and happy life. A strange man in a yellow suit offers his help, he's in town looking for a family he's been trying to locate for years now.

Meanwhile, with Winnie's disappearance, her family grows worried. She is discouraged to leave right away, and thus becomes their willing hostage since Winnie welcomes the change from her stifling home life. There, Winnie meets the Tucks, Angus the dad, Mae, the mom, and the brothers Miles and Jesse.

Jesse's brother Miles grabs her and takes her back to their cabin home. Feeling suffocated, she runs into the woods and encounters a boy, Jesse drinking from a tree spring. Winnie lives on her family wooded estate under the strict supervision of her mother and father who insist that she act and behave like a proper lady. A sheltered girl falls in love with an immortal boy who's in danger of having his secret exposed.
